Community service while learning how to maintain common types of boats
Ship 1886 volunteered at San Diego's Youth Aquatic center, a sailing and water sports facility on Fiesta Island. The YAC owns a set of sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards available for use by scouting units, and volunteers help to keep them and the facility in good shape.
During our most recent session, we cleaned up the YAC's tool room and learned a routine repair for Quba boats. We learned how to rivet and operate a drill press to repair a boom.
Along with helping maintain resource that we share, learning how to do this repair ourselves was an opportunity for experience using the tools and equipment involved and a chance to see the kind of upkeep that the boats we use require.
